What causes pimples on your thighs?

Many of us find ourselves wondering "why do I get pimples on my thighs?". Men and women can both experience thigh pimples or raised bumps on their inner thighs. While there are many reasons you may get pimples on your thighs, there are four very common types of thigh bumps: folliculitis, body acne, heat rash or boils.

  • Folliculitis is an infection of hair follicles which may be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or inflamed ingrown hairs. A folliculitis infection will appear as small red bumps can be itchy or panful. Folliculitis is common on the inner and outer thighs,  buttocks, arms and legs.
  • Body acne called acne mechanica is a common cause that's especially common in athletes. That's because it's triggered by excess heat, pressure, friction or rubbing of the skin. The skin may just feel rough or bumpy, even if you can't see actual pimples. But, these thigh pimples can get worse with continued friction.
  • Miliaria or heat rash is the likely cause of temporarily raised lumps on the inner thigh. This Miliaria will show up when you're hot and sweaty that should subside quickly once you cool down.
  • Thigh boils are another common cause of lumps on the inner thighs. A thigh boil is a painful, pus-filled bump that can develop on the surface of your skin. Boils begin as red lumps but can fill with pus and break open. These are often caused by an infection within a hair follicle or oil gland. It's common to find these in places on the body where there is friction.

These skin conditions are usually non-threatening. Pimples on the thighs caused by these conditions may clear up on their own with changes in temperature or lifestyle. However, if any inner thigh rash appears infected, contact your doctor. Signs of infection could include warmth coming from the bumps even after moving to a cool place or pus oozing from the bumps. If you have a bump or bumps that linger, become larger and more painful, come back, or are concerning you, you should see a doctor.

Are thigh pimples caused by chafing?

Pimples on the inner thighs are not a direct symptom of chafing. But, they are often present at the same time as chafing. Many of the causes of chafing are also the causes of pimples, such as bacteria, excessive heat, sweat and broken skin caused by friction. Thigh pimples can also become exacerbated with the addition of skin chafing. Sweat and friction exacerbate both chafing, infected follicles, sweat pimples, and heat rash. So it should be no surprise that chafing and thigh pimples or rashes are often seen together.

How do you get rid of chafing pimples?

If you have chafing and lumps on your legs already then you shouldn't ignore it – skin chafing should be treated! Gently clean the aggravated area with water and dry it thoroughly. After cleaning the area, apply a substance like petroleum jelly. If the area is very painful, swollen, bleeding, or crusted, you may need to see your health care provider for a medicated ointment.
